Add AC3 passthrough preference

Description

Please add an "Enable AC3 passthrough" checkbox to the preference pane. It is not very user friedly to edit the com.cod3r.a52codec.plist manually all the time.

Change History

  • Status changed from new to closed
  • Resolution set to invalid

This is on purpose, in an attempt to limit the AC3 passthrough only to those who know what they are doing. AC3 passthrough requires a lot more setup than simply flipping that preference.

I think AC3 passtrough is at the moment the simplest way to get 5.1 Audio on a Home Cinema System. I guess that everyone who has a Home Cinema System is interested to have this option since it provides the best possible audio experience. So everyone should have the possibility to use it without hacking plist files.

I dont think the setup procedure is very difficult:

  1. Connect the AV Receiver with the optical Toslink cable
  2. Set the Perian audio preferences to multichannel Output (This step could be done by Perian automatically)
  3. Configure Audio Midi Setup for Output with 48000 Hz (Is it maybe possible that the Perian PrefPane? can change this too?)
  4. Enable AC3 passthrough (Maybe with a checkbox in the PrefPane?)

If you think this is too advanced you can hide the passthrough option in an "Advanced" Tab in PrefPane?.

I think everyone with an AV Receiver would enjoy this option since changing the plist files is very unconfortable. An you have to disable passtrough after diconnecting the receiver to have normal stereo audio again which is very unconfortable to.

For these reasons I would really appreciate this feature and I think it is very easy to implement.

If this option were in the preferences, we would be inundated with people who are incapable of following all the directions claiming it doesn't work. This is evident by the fact that your directions are actually wrong. In addition, it doesn't work for all receivers.

Let me make this perfectly clear:
Passthrough in its current condition is a hack and as such it should remain only available to those who know what they are doing. I have documented all the steps on the web, and a google search yields my documentation for them (sadly, the result is below one who gets is wrong). We will never put this in the UI unless it is a far more reliable, and that's my final word on the matter.
