iTunes crashing when hovering the menu

Description

Hello over there.

I had a nice discussion over at AppleDiscussions? about that problem. I had a problem with iTunes 7.5, with 7.6 it was gone, but is re-introduced itself with 8 again.

When I watch a video on iTunes and hover over the video itself, thus bringing up the floating menu, iTunes and the whole OS is crashing down.

I could track that problem to perian, since I don't have that problem without perian. The minute I install it again, iTunes ist crashing again! But only when hovering over the video itself while watching!

MacOS 10.4.11, NVidia Geforce 8600M GT, Perian 1.1, iTunes 8.

Do you have a crash log since we haven't seen this? Without a useful crashlog, or any sort of evidence as to what is wrong, we cannot do anything more for you.

This doesn't guarantee that the fault is with Perian. Perian has exposed bugs in other components/software in the past. It is far more likely that iTunes is at fault than Perian, especially if only certain version exhibit this.

How/Where would I find a crash log?

Don't know, especially since the system totally freezes. It is not a crash, everything is hard frozen!

So, nobody seems to be interested in this problem?

For me, it is a total showstoper. You know, I would love to use Perian, but I can't. Everytime it is installed and I use a video-function, the system hard-freezes without any chance other then hard-reset.

That is not good!

It happens in Perian 1.1.2, too, btw! Just checked.

Help me, plz! I would like to help you narrow this down, but since I can't find any crash-logs or something like that, I can't help you. Or should I video this problem and upload it to youtube that somebody believes me?

If the entire system crashes, not just iTunes, this is a bug caused by Apple or NVidia and not by Perian. It's very difficult and probably impossible for us to work around it.

Nevertheless, try running this in Terminal with 1.1.2:

defaults write org.perian.Perian ExperimentalQTFlags -boolean 1
defaults write org.perian.Perian DebugLogFile ~/perian.log

and see if it still crashes. If it does, post perian.log from your home directory if it exists and run

defaults delete org.perian.Perian DebugLogFile

to get rid of it.

Oh yeah and it doesn't do that for me with 10.5.
